This Toyota MR2 SW20 came into our Birmingham studio for a full colour change wrap using 3M Metallic Black vinyl. The car arrived in its original black paintwork, but the owner wanted a finish with more depth and presence. Metallic Black was the right call. The result is a car that carries the same silhouette it always had but with a surface that reads entirely differently in the light.

Why Metallic Black Works on the MR2 SW20

The SW20 is a car with strong, deliberate lines. The mid-engine layout gives it a compact, planted stance and the bodywork has a sculptural quality that rewards a finish with some movement in it. Solid black flattens that out. Metallic Black does the opposite. The flake in the film catches the light differently depending on the angle, which means the curves of the rear quarters, the lip of the spoiler, and the crease lines across the doors all become more visible, not less. The pop-up headlights and the GTS badging read crisply against the dark metallic ground. It is a finish that suits the car’s character without trying to change it.

What the Job Required

The MR2 SW20 is a compact car but it has some surfaces that require careful attention. The rear quarters wrap tightly around the wheel arches and the panel edges around the pop-up headlight housings demand precise cutting and tucking to keep the finish clean. The spoiler was wrapped separately to ensure full coverage with no lifting at the trailing edge. We worked into every shut line and panel gap so that the Metallic Black reads as consistent from every angle. 3M film was selected for this job because of its conformability and the reliability of its metallic finish across complex surface geometry.

Protection and Reversibility

The original paintwork is preserved under the film. For a car like the SW20, which has a following and a collector market attached to it, that matters. The wrap protects the factory finish from stone chips, light abrasion, and day-to-day road contamination. If the owner decides to change direction or return the car to standard at any point, the vinyl comes off cleanly and the paint underneath remains as it was. The Metallic Black finish can also be maintained and cleaned the same way as any wrapped vehicle, with no specialist products required.

The Finished Car

The completed MR2 SW20 is a car that looks exactly as it should. The Metallic Black finish gives it the depth the owner was looking for without altering what makes the car recognisable. It is still an MR2. It is just a better version of one. If you have a project in mind, get in touch with our team in Birmingham and we can talk through what is possible.
