This McLaren 720S came into our Birmingham studio for a full colour change from its original orange to Gloss Black, with carbon fibre accenting throughout. The 720S is one of the most visually striking cars McLaren has produced, and the brief on this one was to take that further. Orange is a strong colour on the 720S, but Gloss Black with carbon is a different proposition entirely.
Gloss Black on the 720S Sharpens Every Surface and Makes the Carbon Fibre Work Harder
The 720S has a body that is all surface tension and intent. The dihedral doors, the sculpted side intakes, the low aggressive nose and the sweeping roofline all have a purpose to them, and Gloss Black reads against that bodywork in a way that orange simply cannot match. The finish picks up light across every panel and creates definition along the creases and edges that gives the car a precision it did not have before. Set against that, the carbon fibre accenting provides texture and contrast in exactly the right places. The two finishes work together rather than competing, and the result is a car that looks considerably more serious than it did in its original colour.
Wrapping a 720S Requires a Level of Care That Matches the Car It Is Going On
The 720S is one of the most complex cars to wrap well. The active aerodynamic elements, the exposed carbon fibre components in the factory build, the precision panel gaps, and the compound curves across almost every surface all demand a methodical approach and a high standard of execution. Gloss film is unforgiving. Any imperfection in the application, any tension inconsistency or edge that is not finished cleanly, reads immediately under the finish. We worked through every panel with the care this car requires, taking back the necessary trim to ensure the colour runs into every shut line and edge correctly. The carbon fibre accenting was then applied to complement the wrap and sit cleanly against the surrounding gloss surfaces.
The Original Orange Paint Is Preserved Beneath the Film and the Car Can Be Returned to Standard at Any Point
The factory paintwork on this 720S is completely untouched beneath the wrap. The Gloss Black film protects it from stone chips, light abrasion, and road debris across every wrapped surface. McLarens of this generation hold their value well when the paintwork is in good condition, and wrapping ensures that condition is maintained regardless of how the car is used. When the owner decides to change direction or return the car to its original specification, the film comes away cleanly and the orange paint below will be in the same condition as the day it arrived with us.
